Player was formed in early 1977 by Englishman
Peter Beckett. Peter was joined by Ronn Moss, J.C. Crowley and
John Freisen. The band became rapidly successful following their
first single release "Baby Come
Back", which reached the #1 position on the Billboard
chart, and stayed there for four consecutive weeks in late 1978.
The second single "This Time I'm In It
For Love" reached #7 and the album Player
gained Platinum Status. Three more top 40 singles and three albums
followed, but the band split in 1982 after extensive major touring
with the likes of Boz Scaggs, Eric Clapton, Heart and Kenny
Loggins.
Beckett went on to write hits for the likes of Olivia Newton John,
Kenny Rogers, The Temptations, Sergio Mendes, Little River Band,
Survivor, Heart and Janet Jackson......to name a few, and garnered
many major movie credits including the original "Karate
Kid" theme, "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure",
"Major League", "St. Elmo's Fire" (which
earned him a Grammy nomination), and the theme from Al Pacino's
"Frankie and Johnnie", which he wrote with American
music icon Marvin Hamlisch. Ronn Moss turned to acting, and after
starring in several movies, landed the part of Ridge Forrester on
the worldwide popular daytime drama "The Bold and the
Beautiful", and has remained the male lead on the show for
the last 12 years.
In 1995, Player was reborn featuring original lead singer and
writer Peter Beckett, original bassist Ronn Moss and members of
other well known bands. Following this, the CD "Lost In
Reality" was released in 1996 on the River North label and
earned a nomination at the LA music awards where the band played
live for the first time in 15 years. This "whet the bands
appetite" and they began performing again in the spring of
1998.
